MicrosoftMeet : An Event not to be Missed

MSFTMeetMay

You might have attended the Microsoft Roadshow recently or missed it completely – no worries, here is the opportunity you have been waiting for!

It is time to collaborate together at the first MICROSOFTMEET held by NetLEARN Update. You will be inspired by all the free technologies Microsoft has to offer the educator. In addition, if you are wanting a relevant, current and rewarding professional development route for your teachers, which has badge incentives and tracking, then this session is not to be missed.

Do not be left behind, equip yourself with the knowledge of what is out there to enable teachers to successfully educate our youth using technology as a tool in the classroom.

The MICROSOFTMEET will be run just like previous TeachMeets – with some prizes, cupcakes, refreshments and a great bunch of “unconference” fun, getting together to share experiences.

  • Should you be willing to share a presentation, idea, tool, or just something [big or small] which worked for you in the classroom – please sign up as a Keen Bean.

  • If you would just like to enjoy the two hours and collaborate with others, then sign up as an Enthusiastic Lurker.

  • Should you not be able to make the event but want to contribute something – please do so either by submitting a short audio or video clip or presentation which we can all view at the Meet.

TeachMeet | JABI Secondary School

#MIEExpert15SkypeTeachMeet

This afternoon I participated at a TeachMeet for the Jabi Government Secondary School, Abuja, Nigeria.  Their stunning school website is located at http://www.gssjabi.com/

Thank you to Wellington Oboh for inviting me as a presenter to share the Microsoft Educator Network and Office Mix. It was great to see all the smiling, happy faces throughout the Skype session. I shared my screen in order to present on MSEN, then used the same presentation as an OfficeMix example explaining how one would add Office Mix via the mix.office.com website directly into PowerPoint, the features of Mix as well as a few design considerations.

THEME OF THE TEACHMEET WAS:

“Bridging the divide between digital native learners and traditional teachers by growing a culture of Teaching and Learning though 21st century skills and technology”

MIEExpert15 Greatest Moments to Date

Being chosen as an Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator for 2015 has provided me with the most amazing “learning” MOMENTS to date. Support and involvement from Microsoft South Africa and Globally has been absolutely phenomenal.

Did you know that Microsoft provides such “directed learning” pathways for teachers, students and individuals to professionally develop themselves?

It is extremely important for teachers to engage in their own PD in order to engage students. Every single day I am learning new technologies, new updates, gaining new collaborations and so on.

Often I start to put my technology away, after being stared at over the top of my 2015-02-22 19.59.38laptop by my beautiful jack russell [Laila] who reminds me that it is time to play ball, and “plup” goes my Facebook page with just another burst of learning…so one really needs to be strong and “park” it for a little later…the reason for this comment is that one needs to keep the balance between work and family to remain healthy, happy and productive!

Maybe I should introduce a “no technology evening once a week” 😉

This post highlights my journey of only some of the learning MOMENTS
which I have been exposed to on my journey thus far as an
MIEExpert for 2015:

I am so thankful [and beyond excited] to Microsoft for affording me the opportunity to attend the Redmond Global Forum at the end of April – counting the days till I am able to meet some of the most inspiring teachers in the World, be an agent of change on my return to South Africa, and source opportunities to continue my learning pathway with the newly found knowledge which Redmond instills in me.

MSEN | the Ultimate PLN and PD for Teachers

OfficeMixMSEN

The above Mix is a walk-thorough of the features of the Microsoft Educator Network using OfficeMix as the delivery tool. Click the image to view the mix. This presentation was created as a resource [using OfficeMix] for a Skype call with teachers from Nigeria to share with them the benefits of the MSEN.

Teachers are often apprehensive about changing the way they deliver their lessons. This is not always because they do not want to move forward. Often the mindset is due to the enormous about of time that the change will absorb from their already burdened workload [which is absolutely appreciated, ask me…I know, and I’m sure you do too!]

One can spend a lot of time browsing the net and not really “finding anything of value” if you do not know where to look or do not have a PLN or support. This is when most give up…unless they have knowledge about the MSEN.

The Microsoft Educator Network is referred to as the MSEN. It contains a Resources Area [Free Tools, Learning Activities, Tutorials, Quick Tip Videos and Bing in the Classroom]; Professional Development section [Earn Badges, Courses, EduCast Webinars and Global Educator Exchange]; Community [Discussions, Hot Topic Blogs] and Special Opportunities [Educator Programme and more]

The MSEN is located at http://www.educatornetwork.com

The benefits of the MSEN website are explained in the mix above. Besides all the benefits listed, my most favourite things about the Educator Network are that everything is under one roof, is 100% free, and the opportunity for collaboration with others is immense. Not to mention that one can do PD in the comfort of one’s own home, with a group of teachers or in a training session at school AND IN YOUR OWN TIME!

To all the teachers out there who have the Educator Network as their personal learning network for professional development, support or the ability to locate applicable educational resources, I challenge you to inspire TWO teachers by helping them access such a beneficial resource as the Microsoft Educator Network.

And guess what! If you have a device, you are able to complete a course and earn a badge, anywhere…anytime. The website displays perfectly on my device:

2015-01-19 21.29.17

So spread the news…look no further than the MSEN for the latest technological trends in education.

Watch this blog for my next post on the tips and tricks when compiling an OfficeMix

Dedicated Teachers from Abuja | Skype Call

Well it certainly has been a very busy time in “my world ” the past few months! Hence the lack of posting to my blog due to organising a wedding, starting a new position, and just getting involved in helping others through social media. 2015 has started off with very positive interactions and I am most certainly looking forward to getting involved, and challenging myself this year!

On Friday at 16h00 Nigerian time, I was invited by Wellington Oboh [Principal Education Officer at FCTA SEB] to address his teachers from the Anglican Girls Grammar School in Abuja, Nigeria. The nature of the call was to show them the benefits of the MSEN [Microsoft Educator Network] and to discuss how one could use Office Mix in the classroom. Such dedicated teachers to be interested in a Skype call from Cape Town at 16h00 on a Friday! I thoroughly enjoyed the session, although I could not see the teachers whilst presenting, they produced a short clip where I was able to see lovely Amen, the lady who addressed me with a question as to how the Educator Network would be beneficial for teachers. Below is a snippet from the Skype call…

During the presentation I shared a link to my Office Mix with which I created a walk through of the Microsoft Educator Network. Teachers who have not yet taken advantage of this fantastic resource, should sign up right now – click here to open the site and get cracking on your own Professional Development for Free.

CALL FOR COLLABORATION – THE ANGLICAN GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR GIRLS IN ABUJA, NIGERIA WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER ANGLICAN GIRLS SCHOOLS IN CAPE TOWN – PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU ARE KEEN TO GET YOUR SCHOOL INVOLVED.
